About the ASQ CSSBB Exam

The ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) credential is designed for experienced professionals who lead improvement projects, apply the DMAIC methodology, analyze complex data, and guide cross-functional teams. The exam is broad and application-focused, requiring candidates to move between leadership, project management, Lean Six Sigma tools, statistical analysis, and practical decision-making.

The computer-based CSSBB exam contains 165 multiple-choice questions, including 150 scored questions and 15 unscored pretest questions. Candidates receive 4 hours and 18 minutes of exam time within a 4.5-hour appointment. The examination is open book, subject to ASQ’s rules for reference materials.

Applicants must also meet ASQ’s experience and project requirements. Candidates need either one completed Six Sigma project with a signed affidavit and three years of relevant work experience, or two completed projects with signed affidavits.

The 150 scored questions are distributed across nine Body of Knowledge sections:

Organization-Wide Planning and Deployment: 12 questions
Covers Six Sigma and Lean principles, organizational maturity, strategic alignment, project selection, leadership responsibilities, change management, and barriers to deployment.

Organizational Process Management and Measures: 12 questions
Includes stakeholder impact, benchmarking, performance measures, financial measures, balanced scorecards, KPIs, objectives and key results, return on investment, and cost-benefit analysis.

Team Management: 15 questions
Covers team formation, roles, member selection, team development, communication, motivation, conflict resolution, leadership approaches, facilitation, and training.

Define: 20 questions
Focuses on the voice of the customer, customer requirements, project charters, business cases, project scope, SIPOC, process mapping, stakeholder analysis, and project-management tools.

Measure: 25 questions
Includes process flow metrics, data collection, measurement scales, descriptive statistics, probability, distributions, measurement system analysis, process stability, and capability analysis.

Analyze: 22 questions
Covers correlation, regression, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance, contingency tables, nonparametric methods, root cause analysis, process analysis, and waste identification.

Improve: 21 questions
Includes design of experiments, solution generation and selection, Lean improvement methods, mistake-proofing, cycle-time reduction, equipment effectiveness, pilot testing, and implementation planning.

Control: 17 questions
Focuses on statistical process control, control charts, control plans, sustaining improvements, documentation, training, monitoring, and transferring responsibility to process owners.

Design for Six Sigma Frameworks and Methodologies: 6 questions
Covers DMADV, DMADOV, Design for X, robust design, tolerance design, and statistical tolerancing.
