About the ASQ CMQ/OE Exam

The ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) credential is designed for experienced quality professionals who lead organizational improvement, support strategic planning, manage teams and projects, evaluate business performance, and drive quality across functions. The exam is broad and management-focused, requiring candidates to move between leadership, strategy, finance, quality systems, process improvement, customer focus, supplier management, and organizational decision-making.

The computer-based CMQ/OE exam contains 180 multiple-choice questions, including 165 scored questions and 15 unscored pretest questions. Candidates receive 4 hours and 18 minutes of exam time within a 4.5-hour appointment. The examination is open book, subject to ASQ's rules for reference materials.

Applicants must also meet ASQ's experience requirements. Candidates need 10 years of full-time, paid work experience in one or more areas of the CMQ/OE Body of Knowledge, including 5 years in a decision-making position. Education may reduce part of the 10-year experience requirement, with waivers ranging from one year for a technical or trade school diploma to five years for a master's or doctorate degree.

The current 2026 CMQ/OE Body of Knowledge, effective for exams beginning July 1, 2026, distributes the 165 scored questions across seven sections.

Leadership: 28 questions
Covers organizational structures, leadership and management responsibilities, change management, leadership techniques, empowerment, team development, team roles, team performance, ethics, compliance, confidentiality, and organizational governance.

Strategic Plan Development and Deployment: 23 questions
Includes mission, vision, values, strategic planning models, SWOT and PESTLE analysis, market forces, stakeholder analysis, technology, internal capabilities, legal and regulatory factors, tactical planning, resource allocation, performance measurement, and deployment of quality initiatives.

Management Elements and Methods: 26 questions
Covers management principles and styles, human resources, financial management, ROI, ROA, NPV, IRR, risk management, knowledge management, communication, interpersonal skills, project management, project planning tools, quality systems, ISO 9000 principles, quality methodologies, and quality philosophies.

Quality Management Tools: 31 questions
Includes the seven basic quality tools, management and planning tools, root cause analysis, PDCA, DMAIC, SIPOC, 8D, CAPA, A3, FMEA, innovation tools, cost of quality, Lean methods, theory of constraints, sampling, descriptive statistics, measurement systems, control charts, process variation, process capability, and basic reliability concepts.

Customer-Focused Organizations: 22 questions
Covers internal and external customers, customer segmentation, qualitative customer information, voice of the customer, QFD, customer satisfaction, loyalty, retention, customer service principles, and managing multiple or conflicting customer requirements.

Supply Chain Management: 19 questions
Includes supplier selection and approval, supplier risk, supplier communication, supplier performance, supplier improvement, audits, corrective action, supplier certification, partnerships, logistics, ship-to-stock, just-in-time, and incoming material inspection.

Training and Development: 16 questions
Covers training plans, training needs analysis, skill matrices, gap analysis, adult learning principles, training methods, coaching, mentoring, and evaluation of training effectiveness.
